What clicks per second measures, and what it doesn't
This tool counts every click during a timer you choose and divides by the time elapsed: clicks per second (CPS) is throughput, not speed of response. That's a different skill from reaction time, which measures the gap between a single signal and a single response (this site's separate Reaction Time Test covers that). A fast clicker with a slow reaction time, or the reverse, is entirely possible, since one measures how quickly you can repeat an action and the other measures how quickly you can start one.
CPM (clicks per minute) is the same number scaled up, useful mainly for comparing against contexts, like typing or data-entry benchmarks, that are conventionally reported per minute rather than per second.
Why the test offers five different durations
A 1-second window rewards a short, maximal burst, since a single fast flurry of clicks dominates the whole result with no time to fatigue. A 60-second window averages that same burst potential against sustained effort, so a score that looked impressive at 1 second usually comes down once fatigue and rhythm-holding enter the picture. Neither duration is more correct. They measure burst speed versus sustained rate, the same way a 100m sprint time and a mile time both measure running speed without being interchangeable.
Pick a longer duration if you want a rate closer to what you could sustain in an actual game or task, and a shorter one if you specifically want to test peak burst speed.
How this compares to a validated clinical measure
The Finger Tapping Test is a real neuropsychological instrument, originally developed by Ward Halstead in 1947 and later standardized by Ralph Reitan (Reitan & Wolfson, 1985) as part of the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. It asks someone to tap a single key or button continuously, one finger only, for a fixed 10-second trial, averaged across several trials, and clinicians use it to help screen for conditions like Parkinson's disease and the after-effects of traumatic brain injury. Ruff & Parker (1993) and later replications commonly report a young, healthy adult's dominant-hand average at roughly 50-55 taps per 10-second trial, i.e. about 5.0-5.5 taps per second.
That figure describes continuous single-finger tapping under controlled clinical conditions, not this tool's own click session, so treat it as a documented reference point rather than a pass/fail score. Community click-speed-test results well above that range are typically attributed to alternating two fingers, using a fast wrist motion, or named techniques like jitter clicking and butterfly clicking, none of which are single-finger continuous tapping. A much higher CPS on this tool doesn't contradict the clinical figure. It usually just means the clicker used a different technique.
