What actually determines how far a club hits the ball
Distance comes from ball speed at impact, and ball speed comes from clubhead speed multiplied by how efficiently the strike transfers energy (smash factor). A driver's low loft keeps more of that speed pointed forward rather than upward, so it converts a given clubhead speed into more total distance than any other club. Move down through the irons and each one is built with more loft and a shorter shaft: more loft trades some ball speed for a higher, shorter-carrying trajectory, and a shorter shaft is easier to control but generates less clubhead speed. That's why a 7-iron and a driver, swung by the same golfer with similar effort, land in very different spots.
TrackMan's published launch-monitor data puts the average male amateur's driver clubhead speed around 93.4 mph, producing roughly 214 yards of total distance, which works out to about 2.3 yards of distance per mph of clubhead speed. PGA Tour players average closer to 114-116 mph and carry a driver around 282-300 yards. The gap between amateur and tour swing speeds (roughly 20-25 mph) is far smaller than the resulting gap in outcome (60-90 yards), so small speed gains matter more than they might seem to. It's also why generic "add 10 yards" advice ignores how much of driver distance is just clubhead speed.
Why one known distance can scale the whole bag
A set of irons and wedges is built as a progression: each club typically adds about 3-4 degrees of loft and shortens the shaft by roughly half an inch compared to the one above it. That consistent progression is why a golfer's distance with, say, a 7-iron tends to sit at a fairly predictable fraction of their driver distance. Golf-fitting data commonly shows a 7-iron landing around 55-65% of driver distance across skill levels, with the wedges compressing further, down to anywhere from roughly a fifth to half of driver distance depending on the specific wedge and skill tier. This tool uses that relationship in reverse: enter the one distance most golfers actually know, how far they carry a driver, and it rescales the published skill-tier chart by that same ratio, rather than asking for nine separate numbers most players have never measured.
The scaling is capped between half and 1.8 times the tier baseline. Outside that range the ratio stops reflecting a real swing and starts reflecting a typo or an unusually mismatched skill tier. When that happens, pick the tier closer to your actual swing speed instead of stretching the scale factor to compensate.
Reading the gaps between clubs
Golf-fitting guides generally treat an 8-15 yard gap between consecutive clubs as healthy, tightening toward 8-12 yards through the wedges where precision matters more than raw distance. A much wider gap usually means there is room in the bag for another club (a hybrid between the longest iron and the fairway wood is the most common fix); a much tighter gap suggests two clubs that do nearly the same job. This chart only tracks nine anchor clubs, driver, 3-wood, the 5/7/9-irons, and four wedges, so a wide-looking gap here, especially between the 3-wood and 5-iron, often just reflects clubs this simplified list skips (a 5-wood, hybrid, or 4-iron) rather than a real hole in a full 14-club bag.
